How do you track phone calls from Google Ads?

By Logen DoielUpdated Published

Quick answer

Phone calls from Google Ads are tracked two ways: calls placed directly from a call asset in the ad, and calls from the website after an ad click, usually measured with a Google forwarding number or call-tracking number on the landing page. Set a minimum call length so short or accidental calls are not counted as conversions.

The full answer

For many coating contractors, the phone is the most important conversion. If calls are not tracked, the campaign cannot optimize toward them, and you cannot tell whether your spend produced conversations or just clicks.

  • Calls from ads: tracked through call assets.
  • Calls from the website: a dynamic number that swaps in for ad visitors.
  • Tap-to-call clicks: useful as a signal, but a click is not a completed call.
  • Minimum duration: filters out wrong numbers and hang-ups.
